What solid wood needs in order to last
The limits of solid wood are solved by choosing it and fitting it correctly from the start.
- Choose a moisture-tolerant hardwood, such as Teng or Takhian Thong, for exterior floors.
- Use kiln-dried timber at no more than 12% moisture content to reduce shrinkage, warping and splitting.
- Set joists roughly 35–40 cm apart, leave 3–5 mm gaps between boards, and raise the deck so air can move underneath.
- Fix with stainless steel screws and treat every face of the board with wood preservative before laying.
- Maintain the surface with oil or a UV-blocking stain on a regular cycle.
