Wood guide: compare real woods at a glance

Hardness, density and durability as meter bars on one shared scale, so you can compare them by eye — in-stock woods first, ready to price.

Choosing the right finish

Two finishing systems that differ in feel, durability and work involved — pick by how the piece is used.

Natural wax (food-grade)

Real-wood feel, visible grain, food-safe, fewer steps, lower cost

Feel
Real wood, grain shows
Food contact
Food-grade: boards and trays are fine
Durability
Less hard-wearing, re-wax now and then
Work / cost
Fewer steps, lower cost
Repairs
Sand the spot and re-wax — DIY-friendly
Best for
home décor, everyday items, small pieces, trays, boards

Film coat: lacquer/PU

High water, heat and scratch resistance, more steps

Feel
Smooth film, gloss or matt to spec
Food contact
For surfaces holding dishes, not cutting boards
Durability
High water, heat and scratch resistance
Work / cost
More steps, higher cost
Repairs
Deep marks need stripping and recoating
Best for
heavy use, tabletops, counters, cafés/restaurants

≈ approximate = a figure for the trade group or plantation-grown timber (plantation/research data), not a test result for that species itself · MC = moisture content at the time of testing (12% is the standard)

Janka = the force needed to press a steel ball into the wood; the higher it is, the better the wood resists denting · Real-world properties depend on where the timber came from, its age and how it was kiln-dried. Our team can help you pick a wood that suits your budget and how the piece will be used.

Questions about wood

How does solid wood differ from plywood and substitute materials?

Solid wood is strong and hard-wearing, can be repaired, sanded back and refinished, and lasts longer. Substitute materials cost less but usually do not handle humidity well and are hard to repair — they suit different kinds of work.

Which species should I choose?

It depends on the use, the budget and the tone you want: teak stands up to sun and humidity, while makha is very hard and suits table tops. Compare them on our wood guide page, or ask our team to recommend one.

What is the Janka hardness rating?

Janka is the force needed to press an 11.28 mm steel ball halfway into the wood. The higher the figure, the better the wood resists denting and wear, which suits flooring and stairs. The standard figure is measured at 12% wood moisture content.

What does an "approximate" figure in the wood guide mean?

Some species have no test result of their own, so we use a trade-group figure (the balau or keruing groups, for example) or a figure from plantation-grown timber in research, which may have been tested at a moisture content other than 12%. We state the moisture content (MC) at the time of testing for every figure. They are fine for a rough comparison, but should not be used as structural design values.

Why are phayung, ching chan and mahogany not available?

They are controlled under the CITES convention and/or Thai law, and trade and export are restricted. WisutWood shows the information for study and comparison only: we do not sell or quote these species, and we suggest legal alternatives such as padauk, daeng or makha mong with proper documentation.
